M. Lamont Clikeman, 89, of Rockford, died Monday, April 5, 1999, in Wesley Willows Health Care Center. Born April 15, 1909, in Winnebago County, Ill., the son of Roy V. and Allie Dennis Clikeman. Lived all his life in the Rockford area. Married May Daws in Rockford on Oct. 23, 1937; she died Oct. 14, 1971. Married Betty Greene in Rockford on Dec. 27, 1980. After his father’s death, he became a partner in Pagel-Clikeman John Deere Farm Implement Co. for more than a decade. He also was employed by the Rockford School District as a science teacher, teaching at the old Rockford High School. Science department head at East High and retired from Auburn High as head of the science department. He was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church, where he was head of the junior department Sunday school for 25 years. Member and past president of Rockford Men’s Garden Club. Served on Bright Side Board of Directors. Volunteer at Rockford Memorial Hospital for many years, and was named Volunteer of the Year. Attended the one-room Owen Center Grade School. Graduated from Rockford High School and received his BA and MA degrees from the University of Wisconsin. Survivors include wife, Betty, daughter, Susan Gellerstadt of Hoffman Estates; son, Richard R. (Maureen McCreadie) Clikeman of Morrisville, Pa.; grandsons, Kurt Gellerstadt of Hoffman Estates, Ryan Clikeman and Chad Clikeman of Morrisville; stepchildren, Becky (Ken) Bucholz of Elk Grove Village, Cindy (Bob) Bunker of Alphretta, Ga., and Debbie Greene of Muscatine, Iowa; eight step-grandchildren; and two cousins, Ellis Green and Don Clikeman. Also predeceased by son-in-law, Guy Gellerstadt in 1996.
Services at 2 p.m. Friday, April 9, in Court Street United Methodist Church sanctuary, with the Rev. Charles Sensel officiating. Burial in Willwood Burial Park. Visitation 1 p.m. to service time Friday in the church. Memorial gifts to Rockford Area Gardeners of America.
