James Crow, a beloved figure in the Rockford theater community and an inspiring educator passed away on Wednesday at the age of 78. James, known for his passion for the arts and his dedication to teaching, left an indelible mark on the lives of many through his work as a theater director and drama teacher.
Starring for decades in musicals and plays in Rockford and beyond, James created many memorable roles, including King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar, Daphne in Sugar, Hysterium in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. As a director, he led countless productions while nurturing young performers' talents across the community, including Starlight Theatre in Rockford, Illinois. His infectious enthusiasm, unmatched creativity, and deep love for the stage inspired countless students and colleagues. His influence extended beyond the theater, as he became a mentor, friend, and advocate for arts education. He also taught at numerous schools throughout Rockford, including Auburn High School and Wilson Middle School, where he helped establish the Creative and Performing Arts Program. Other schools include East High School, Eisenhower Middle School, and most recently, the Maria Montessori School.
He served on the Arts Council’s Board of Directors and was the Artistic Director of Creative and Performing Arts School for the Rockford Board of Education. He also served as director of the Pec Playhouse in Pecatonica. He was a proud member of the Court Street Methodist Church and Community, where, through his deep faith, he led the youth and senior ministries.
James's legacy is one of unwavering commitment to education and the students he was honored to guide. He was a director and a storyteller who believed in the transformative power of the arts. His work brought joy, laughter, and reflection to the Rockford community and beyond.
His family survives him: son Andrew Crow, daughter Cory Geary, and three wonderful grandchildren, Parker, Carson, and Tommy. James Crow’s memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched and in the vibrant arts community he helped to build.

A Memorial Service will be held at Court Street Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 10th from 4-5. A Celebration of Life reception will follow, at a venue to be announced.
