NICHOLAS F. CASCIO JR. ROCKFORD - Nicholas F. Cascio Jr., of Rockford passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013. He was born May 21, 1955 to Nicholas F. and Theresa A. (Dall' Olio) Cascio. Nick was a lifelong resident of Rockford and a graduate of Auburn High School. After high school, he became a member of Iron Workers Local #498. In 1980 Nick was involved in an auto accident that caused a spinal cord injury, leaving him a quadriplegic. Through this life changing event, he has been an inspiration to all those who have known him. His zest for life and his love for his family and friends gave him the tenacity to maintain a positive attitude when many in his position would have given up. He truly loved his nieces and nephews, and enjoyed every moment he spent with them. He never passed up an opportunity to share a life lesson with each of them. Nick was an avid fan of the Cubs and Bears. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and those who had the privilege of taking care of him. Nick is survived by his siblings, Judy (Tim) Gilmore of Brandon, FL., Marge (Keith) Anderson of DeKalb, and Jerry Cascio of Rockford , eight nieces and nephews, and nine great nieces and nephews. Also survived by his longtime girlfriend, Beth Young, and best friend and devoted caregiver, Dale Daughenbaugh. The family would like to thank Dr. Roy and the many staff members of Rockford Health System and also St. Anthony Medical Center, who cared for Nick over the last 33 years. Predeceased by his father Nick in 1998 and mother Theresa in 2013. A celebration of Nick's life will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 in Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 S. Mulford Road. Father Carl Beekman officiating. Visitation from 3 p.m. until service time Tuesday in the Funeral Home. Private family burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family.
