John Layton (ROTC)

Sgt. Major John H. Layton, 70, Rockford, died at 5:32 P.M. Thursdary, Jan. 5, 1995, in Swedish American Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 5, 1924, in Princeton, son of Samuel H. and Norma Hawes Layton Sr.  Lived 25 years in Rockford.  Married Gisela Battke in Wichita Falls, Texas.  
Employed as maintenance electrician by Chrysler Corp. in Belvidere for 16 years, retiring in 1987.  Veteran of World War II and Korea, serving in U.S. Army.  Member Camp Knox Masonic Lodge 919 and Shriners.
Survivors include his wife, Gisela Layton, Rockford; one son, Larry (Mary) Layton, Fayetteville, N.C.; three daughters, Diane (Tim) Lincoln, Woodloch, Texas, Jean (Donald) Morris, Hayward, Wis., and Kristina Mikkelson, Schaumburg; three grandchildren; one brother, Samuel H. Layton Jr., California.
Graveside services at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, in Chapel of Love located in Sunset Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. William Richard Kerr Sr. officiating.  Arrangements by SUNSET FUNERAL HOME, 8800 N. Alpine Road.
