Karl J. Gartner Jr., 68, 5715 Elaine Drive, died at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, March 15, 1992, in Saint Anthony Medical Center after a brief illness.  Born Nov. 8, 1923, in St. Charles, Ill., son of Karl J. and Anne Carse Gartner. 
Lived 34 years in Rockford, coming here from St. Charles.  Married Helen Racic in St. Charles, Feb. 12, 1949.  Taught music and mathematics in Rockford public and parochial schools many years; retired in 1987.
Former church organist in St. Charles and Geneva, and had served as organist at St. Edward Catholic Church since 1973; also was choir director at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Rockford.
Graduated from Notre Dame University and American Conservatory of Music, Chicago. 
Survivors include his wife ,Hellen; one son, Jim (Mary Lou) Gartner, Arlington Heights; five daughters, Mary (Jerome) Ochab, Mundelein, Kathy Carlson, Peoria, Jeanne Hufford, Rockford, Susanne Gartner and Barbara Gartner, Milwaukee; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Delores Dean, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Anne (Murray) Sims, Flossmoor.  Predeceased by parents.
Services at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 18. Om St. Edward Catholic Church, with Father James Murphy, pastor, officiating.  Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, St. Charles. 
Arrangements by Sundberg Funeral Home Ltd., 215 N. 6th St.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to Father Emmett Murphy Educational Fund at St. Edward Catholic Church.
